This Christmas we were asked to decorate a tree at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia for the Festival of Trees. Twelve trees decorated by local Philadelphia businesses are on display through the holidays in the historic and grand lobby of the Ritz Carlton. Proceeds from the sale of hot chocolate benefit Philabundance. Philabundance is a wonderful Philly organization created in 1984 on the simple belief that no man, woman or child should go hungry.
We did our best to capture the spirit of the holidays and also the spirit of Three Potato Four by decorating our tree with found objects from nature. On our hikes in the woods, local trails and our backyard we gathered pinecones, berries, seed pods and fallen branches and collected, bottled, and labeled each of them. Please visit our 3P4 tree at the Ritz and of course warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. Merry Christmas.
Our good friend Sean is a public school teacher in the city of Philadelphia. We hear his stories about everyday life at his school, how the children in his class have an awesome sense of humor and many a strong desire to learn. He’s told us of the set backs and hurdles with the public school system and the struggle to keep trouble out of these children’s everyday school life. We admire what our friend Sean Gray does each and every day for his school and the children who attend it. With the release of our newest city series print Philadelphia Neighborhood Liberty Bell (by our favorite artist Jim Datz) we wanted to somehow give back to Philly.
Stu and I came upon a great organization Donors Choose that does just that for public school classrooms in need. Here’s how it works: public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on Donorschoose.org. Request range form pencils for a poetry writing unit, reading mats for reading time, books for classroom libraries, projectors for a history lesson, the list goes on, etc. Public school teachers get direct help they need.
There are MANY classrooms in need right here in Philly and with every Philadelphia Liberty Bell Print we sell we will be donating 10% of the proceeds we receive to a Philly classroom through Donors Choose.
On February 10 + 11 in our space on Shurs Lane we will be bringing together makers, shopkeepers, and artists whom we’ve met and admire. We wanted to promote the hardworking ever-growing community of small businesses and young entrepreneurs right here in Philadelphia. And so, we’ve gathered a select few of them for our OUTPOST shopping event.
Together, we think they bring an awesome selection of quality goods – from perfectly selected fresh flowers to handmade facinators and one-of-kind headpieces from handcrafted ties and bowties to a bag of finely roasted small batch coffee. You’ll find everything from heritage clothing to houseware keepsakes made from recovered olde things. Pick up a unique valentine gift, a coveted poster with amazing typography or simply a delicious cup of coffee, cupcake or artisanal grilled cheese sandwich from select Philly food vendors. And, for the Friday opening party sample a cocktail with spirits made right here in PA.
Plus for OUTPOST the shop will be filled with lots of Three Potato Four finds – a fresh stock of inventory we’ve been collecting and gathering just for this event.
Stay tuned here on our blog, where we will individually highlight each of our participants at OUTPOST.
Hope you can join us.
