“The Daily Cookie”…does not exist, as far as I know, but that would be the name for the bakery I sometimes daydream about opening. For me, a cookie a day is always part of the mix, so I thought I’d recap my top 5 favorites…in no particular order.

City Bakery NYC
Located next door to one of my previous jobs (yay for me!), City Bakery’s chocolate chip cookie is perhaps the one. Although I’m not proud of the fact that one of my favorite cookies is a bit gourmet and a bit pricey, I can’t avoid the fact that I really think they got this one right. The right blend of sugars, chocolates and cookie goodness all over the place. But take warning, this is a rich cookie and you should probably not go for more than 1 cookie every 3 to 5 days…max.

Adam’s Mom
I have a good friend, Adam, that I grew up with and his mom was quite the chef. I only had her cookies once, but remember eating a gallon-size ziploc bag full of them in one sitting with no problems. No warnings on this one. Good homemade cookies can be eaten a’plenty…and a’often.

Berger Cookies
Nothing beats the small batch goodness of, well, small batch-made goodies. I was introduced to Berger Cookies from our good friend, photographer, and Baltimore-native, Matthew Schenning and have since made these a staple. I tried to put down in words the absolute wonderfulness of this soft fudgie cookie, but actually could not do a better job than one posted on DCist a few years back. So here it is….link. I’d suggest eating no more than 2 of these in a single sitting. Your mouth will cry for more, but your muffin tops will plead for mercy.

Le Pain Quotidien
Known around the hood as “the frisbee” this cookie is large and in charge, but actually only about as thick as two stacked dimes. I’ve had these “flat” cookies in other bakeries, but Le Pain Quotidien knows what’s up – you gotta spread that goodness out over the largest surface area possible that can fit in a commercial oven. Can I get a cookie as big as my head? Yes. Yes you can. Can I correctly pronounce Quotidien? No. No I can’t.

M&M Cookie
I’m almost embarrassed to post about this one as I am not a five year old boy, but come on. I like cookies. I like candy. This isn’t rocket science here.

Honorable Mention: Carvel “Cookie Puss”. While not actually a cookie, who are we to resist the crunchies?

New in the shop are spring totes + pouches, new journals, some vintage items and a new series of wooden boxes. Hope everyone enjoyed a lovely spring weekend. We ate a lot of chocolate bunnies and found many eggs.

When I first moved to New York, I was living in a tiny brownstone apartment in the West Village with Stu. We were sharing it with another couple and it was tight quarters. Although the street we lived on was the most beautiful street, Morton Street, a tree-lined brownstone block. It was 2001 and the job market for graphic designers was not great. So in the meantime I worked in a cafe around the corner and I started making pillows.
I would sew them in our tiny room and sell them on weekends with Stu at street fairs and also outside our brownstone steps. It was maybe one of the most memorable summers (and hottest) we ever had in new york. Selling our wares. It only lasted a summer -I soon got a full time design position. But working on our own for a bit made us realize it was our eventual goal and that we maybe could do something together as a team. Stu is definitely better business minded and I am happy to do the creative things. We still have some of the pillows I sewed that summer, some of them on Holly’s bed and some we’ve given as gifts to friends. It’s a fun memory, us sitting under a street fair tent, and Stu yelling “Pillows for sale!”

Stu and I used to spend Sunday afternoons browsing the Kinokuniya bookstore in Rockefeller Plaza. We have acquired quite a library of inspiring books and magazines from there, all of which are in Japanese and we cannot read, but the photos are enough.

We came across this book in our collection about making furniture and fun play things for kids out of cardboard. Stu and I have made it our goal to make something fun out of cardboard for Holly’s birthday, which is coming up in May. I love the way the graphics on the boxes look mixed together, and have been saving patterned, colored and fun cardboard boxes that pass through our shop for this project. Although we can’t read the directions, there are step by step photos to follow, hopefully the end result is not wackyshack. Wish us luck.

On our most recent vintage shopping trip I found myself picking up many different vessels and vases. Must have spring flowers and fresh cut flowers on my mind. All different colors, designs and shapes! Look for them in the shop Sunday night/Monday morning.

We just got a fun new shipment from Japan of cafemugs, this blue pear set is my favorite. We are also stocking the shop with fresh new spring items; colorful new totes and accessories and some new paper goods too. Look for these new items arriving in April.

Our weekend was lovely and restful. Lazy naps together, a yummy brunch, a trip to ikea for a chest of drawers for our closet and a swedish meatball lunch.
